A detailed chapter study of the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.
Included:
vocabulary study from various chapters
comprehension questions for a variety of chapters
character analysis on all of the main characters in the book
a wide range of independent activities which engage children with the content of the story.
This is a selection of resources in which I used alongside reading the story to my class. It can be used for guided reading sessions also.
During the independent activities children are asked to:
Re-write the blurb
Re-draw the cover for the book
Write a letter to Veruca Salt’s Dad
Write a diary entry from Grandpa Joe’s point of view.
Design the chocolate palace
Design a golden ticket
Children really engaged with the story and learned some new words also through the vocabulary study.

***THE SPOOKY, MYSTERIOUS SANTA CLAUSE***
I don't know about you, but I struggle to think of things to keep the children busy on the last week of term. So I can up with this this week to try and bring some interesting writing together. It's basically suspense and mystery planning based on creating a spooky Santa Clause.
A 4 day series of lessons on suspense and mystery. These lessons allow children to write in a suspense style by using ellipses, short sentences and making the reader think that there is something hidden. These lessons involve video clips and setting a spooky scene my turning off the lights during the reading of these paragraphs.
A powerpoint, plan and resources are included.
This comprehension is based on Qatar as a country and the processes they’ve put in place in order to host the World Cup 2022. It provides children with an interesting background knowledge of the country while testing their comprehension skills simultaneously.
I have attached comprehension questions/activities for a lower ability, middle ability and higher ability learner, all in the same document.
It worked well for the abilities in my own class, however it can be adapted to suit the needs of your class too.

Text and questions based on deducing and inferring are included.
Fantastic planning on biographies with lots of interesting people to learn about such as authors and footballers. Children will learn how to write successful biographies in an interesting way.
Also included is a weeks worth of SPAG in the form of starters.
This resource allows children to become completely emerged in the writing style of biographies. They will understand how they should be structured, punctuated and what kind of vocabulary to be using.
The planning is extremely detailed, as is the notebook file, which makes your job 10 times easier, as all you have to do is teach from this pack.
There are many differentiated activities included also that just need to be printed. Children will research information on the author Louis Sacher and by the end of the week, they were excited to write a biography about him.

A simple, fun game of dominos to reinforce past tense verbs for EAL children.
Just cut them out in domino shape and allow children to match the correct verb with the past tense.
One version has some pictures, the other just has the words.
This is a follow on lesson that I used to establish understand of possessive apostrophes (could be used as an introduction also). This package contains a powerpoint, a lesson plan and a resource that is differentiated.
The activity is related to Horrid Henry which my children love.
This game involves asking the children to roll a dice and read the sound that their counter lands on. When they read the sound, they must think of a word that this sound is in. I played it in mixed ability pairs, the low ability children just had to try and read the sound. It was a lot of fun and they loved it.
It contains diagraphs, triagraphs, split diiagraphs and single sound letters for a thorough revision.
I wrote a short piece about a Middle Eastern boy joining a British School and decided to make it into a Year 6 SATS sample paper.
The questions are structured exactly like the SATS exams and children can use them as revision in the weeks/months coming up to the SATS exams.
I have uploaded it as a PDF and also a word document. Also, I’ve separated the reading material and the questions in two different documents if required.
Can be used with year 5s also to get them into the SATS style of questioning.

Children cannot and should not be writing their own myth without first of all familiarising themselves with the text type. Having completed that step, they can then begin to think about planning their very own myth.
This resource includes:
*3 day detailed lesson plan.
*Toolkit template for children to write down the features and necessary things needed in order to write a successful myth.
*Myth adaption sheet for drawing their new idea to change the myth.

The idea behind this week of teaching is that children are reciting/acting out the text each day, confirming their understanding of the story structure/sentence structure orally. Once children can do this, they will be able to write their very own version. They are encouraged this week to change one part of the myth in order to write their very own myth. For example: instead of Theseus and the Minotaur, it could be Theseus and the Lemontaur, who is a half lemon, half horse who throws lemons at Theseus?
By the end of these lessons, children should be able to write their very own adaptation to the myth: Theseus and the Minotaur. But as stated earlier, this is a follow on from this lesson:

As last week was Book Week, I planned a week’s worth of lessons based around the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Each day, we read a chapter of the story and then engage in lessons based on what we’ve read. As you can see from the cover image, this involves lots of chocolate!!
The children absolutely adored these lessons and were so engaged in the process of melting chocolate. They needed to see which chocolate would be the best to build the Indian Prince’s palace out of by melting different types of chocolate. HINT: flakes don’t melt!

This resource is made with a Harry Potter theme. Children are introduced to the term pronouns through a short Harry Potter clip where they can hear how badly pronouns are needed in spoken language as well as written. I have made differentiated work resources for the children to use for low ability, middle ability and high abililty- all still based on the Harry Potter Theme.
Children are encouraged to work in groups throughout this lesson to try and practice using pronouns on whiteboards, before their activity. Using a Harry Potter theme worked well in my class as it fun, colourful and different from their normal SPAG lessons, which can sometimes be boring.
I have included a powerpoint, worsheets and a detailed plan with this package.
A weekly plan on non-chronological reports for year 1.
This plan is detailed and differentiated. Children are encouraged to use a signpost sentence to inform the reader what they will read. They will make notes by using a mind map and create an interesting, factual report.

A simple display I used when studying the book ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’. We used this book to create pieces of writing with issues and dilemmas. (Planning is available in my shop also).
Children loved the colorful characters which confirmed their understanding of what a dilemma was, while learning about the country of South Africa at the same time.
*I know the sign in my cover picture (Jo’Berg) is spelled wrong, however I have fixed it in the resource itself.
A comprehension based on the story of ‘Who killed King Tut’. (a report)
Children are encouraged to use their inference skills and comment on why the author has used a certain structure to help the reader.
Children will use a range of reading skills and strategies when answering this comprehension.
6 challenge cards for children to solve upon finishing a comprehension task early or if looking to encourage them to think deeper.
We have been trying to use the A.P.E (answer, prove, explain) technique for inference questions, which encourages children to PROVE their answers by looking at clues in the text/pictures.
These challenge cards remind children to prove their answers.
These spellings are based off the statutory spellings of the English National Curriculum 2014. Children in years 3&4 are expected to spell these words by the end of Year 4, and in my classroom, we try to learn and familiarise ourselves with them as much as possible.
With this resource, I print, laminate and cut up these words and have them in a basket or box in the classroom. As a starter to guided reading or any English lesson really, I take out the basket and give each table 5 words to focus on. They discuss the words and the spelling patterns, along with the meaning. This way the words are familiar to them.
To increase children’s use of these words, any time they use one of them in their writing, they are encouraged to underline it to show they can spell it. Thus, the spelling of my year 4s has greatly improved, thank god!
This resource comes with 109 words in both yellow and black and white.

A 5 day lesson plan based on instructions. Three of the days are based on children evaluating and creating instructions through video clips and practical activities (making paper airplanes and origami fortune tellers). Two of the days are focused on comprehension and handwriting.
The children will be taught how to write successful instructions by understanding that they need to use clear, simple English for their reader to understand clearly what they are directing them to do.
